The route at a glance

Ďumbier (2,043 m) is the highest peak of the Low Tatras. The classic ascent from the south starts at the Trangoška car park at the end of the Bystrá valley, a few minutes by car from Bystrá, and has two parts:

  • Trangoška (1,121 m) to M. R. Štefánik Chalet (1,740 m) on the green trail, 3.4 km, 625 m of ascent, 2 hours by the Slovak Tourist Club (KST) signpost,
  • chalet to summit on the red E8 ridge trail via Rázcestie na Krúpove sedlo (the junction below the saddle) and Krúpove sedlo (the saddle), with the last section a detour marked with a red triangle, about 3.1 km and 1 hour 20 minutes.

In total that is about 6.5 km one way and over 900 m of ascent. Pure walking time up and down comes to around 5.5 hours; with a break at the chalet it is an all-day hike. The times in the article come from Slovak Tourist Club signposts, so they match exactly what you will see on the ground.

Getting there from Bystrá and where to park

From Bystrá you drive up the Bystrá valley, the same way as to the Krupová gondola; open the exact route with the button in the box above. The Trangoška car park is by Hotel Trangoška. According to the Jasná resort car park overview (May 2026) it has 100 spaces and costs €5 a day.

On fine summer and autumn weekends the car park is often full by late morning. It is the starting point for the Štefánik Chalet and for the Cave of Dead Bats, so arrive early. An early start also pays off for the weather: the chalet warns that in summer you must watch out mainly for thunderstorms on the ridge, and they most often arrive in the afternoon.

From Trangoška to Štefánik Chalet

The green trail climbs the Trangoška valley. The chalet lists it as the main approach, and mountain porters carry supplies along it too. The signpost at Trangoška gives 2 hours, and according to the chalet the section is 3.4 km with 625 m of ascent.

About halfway up you reach the junction K jaskyni mŕtvych netopierov (To the Cave of Dead Bats, 1,400 m). From there a short side path leads to the cave entrance, but you can visit the cave only by reservation and with a guide. More in the article on the Cave of Dead Bats. From the junction it is still one hour to the chalet by the signpost.

General M. R. Štefánik Chalet stands in the saddle below Ďumbier on the main ridge. It is open all year, daily from 7:00 to 22:00, and the kitchen cooks until 21:00. You pay in cash only and there is no Wi-Fi. Drinking water comes from a spring below Ďumbier, but in winter it freezes and the chalet has to save water.

From the chalet to the summit, and why not directly

From the chalet you see the summit of Ďumbier straight above you, and it is tempting to go directly up. But only the winter route marked with poles leads directly. The administration of the Low Tatras National Park lists it among the seasonal closures: it is closed whenever there is not a continuous snow cover at least 15 cm deep. So in summer and autumn it is closed.

The summer route follows the red E8 trail towards Chopok. From the chalet you go almost along the contour to Rázcestie na Krúpove sedlo (1,760 m); the signpost gives half an hour. From there the red trail climbs to Krúpove sedlo (1,915 m), another half hour. At the saddle you turn onto the trail marked with a red triangle, which takes you along the ridge to the summit, according to the signpost in about 20 minutes.

From the summit, according to the Jasná resort, there is an all-round view of almost all the mountain ranges of central and northern Slovakia. From 1902 the Karol Shelter Hut (Karlova ochranná chata) stood here, the predecessor of today’s Štefánik Chalet. According to the chalet, today it is just a pile of stones.

Descent and variants

The simplest way is to return the same way. From Krúpove sedlo to the chalet it is 45 minutes by the signpost, and from the chalet to Trangoška an hour and a quarter.

  • Via Chopok and the gondola down. From Krúpove sedlo you continue on the red trail via Demänovské sedlo to Chopok; the signpost gives 1:20 h. You ride down in the cabins via Kosodrevina to Krupová, from where it is under 2 km along the road to Trangoška. It works only when the gondolas run, in autumn 2026 mainly at weekends, and the last ride from Chopok is at 15:00. More on the gondola in the article Chopok South in summer.
  • From Kosodrevina along the Magistrála. When the gondola runs, you can save the first part of the climb. From Kosodrevina the blue Magistrála leads to Rázcestie na Krúpove sedlo, the signpost gives 1:05 h, and from there the route is the same as above. On the way back, watch the time of the last ride down.
  • From Mýto pod Ďumbierom on the yellow trail. A longer and quieter route starts in the neighbouring village and goes through the Mlynná valley. According to the chalet it is 8.1 km with 1,075 m of ascent and takes 3:15 h. The chalet describes it as less well maintained, so we recommend it to fitter hikers.

When to go and what to take

The best conditions are from summer to mid-autumn, when the ridge is free of snow and the days are still long enough. In winter the ridge of the Low Tatras is high-mountain terrain with avalanche danger, and the hike cannot be compared with summer.

  • A windproof jacket, a warm layer and a hat even in August. The ridge is entirely above the tree line, without shade or shelter.
  • Water and food for the whole day; the chalet is the only point with refreshments.
  • Cash; you cannot pay by card at the chalet.
  • Sturdy hiking boots, as the terrain above Krúpove sedlo is stony.
  • A charged phone with the Mountain Rescue Service app or number saved in it.

If clouds start building above the ridge, turn back early. The chalet is a good place to decide: from there it is only an hour and a quarter down to Trangoška.

NAPANT rules and safety

The whole route lies in the Low Tatras National Park. The park administration (NAPANT) stresses these rules in particular:

  • you may walk only on marked hiking trails and nature trails and only in daylight; the park administration ties visiting hours to sunrise and sunset,
  • you must respect marked closures, including seasonal ones such as the winter route from the chalet to Ďumbier,
  • a dog must be on a lead and muzzled,
  • camping and bivouacking outside designated places is forbidden, and you may not camp by the chalet,
  • do not use drones, and bicycles do not belong on the ridge.

Before your hike check the forecast and mountain information on the Mountain Rescue Service website. In an emergency call the Mountain Rescue Service on 18 300 or the emergency number 112.

What to combine it with

After a full day on the mountain, warm water is welcome. The Hotel Bystrá water and sauna world is across the road from Bosorka Apartments, so you can walk there even with sore feet. If you would like a more comfortable mountain day, see Chopok South in summer with the gondola from Krupová, and for the whole stay the Chopok South itinerary.
